If your Nauticom dial-up connection does not appear to be stable, the source of the problem is typically related to your modem or phone line. Before troubleshooting those areas, you should verify your dial-up configuration.

To verify your dial-up configuration, please follow the instructions in the manual for your operating system in the configuration setup area. The next step is to verify you have the most recent drivers and/or firmware for your specific modem. Updating modem drivers and software can drastically improve your overall connection. If you need assistance installing updates, you will want to contact your modem manufacturer.

If your drivers/firmware are current and you are still not experiencing a stable connection, try reinitializing your modem with an initialization string. Try, and try again.

If all else fails, contact our Support Staff. We’d be glad to offer additional modem support and/or offer suggestions to assist with your connection.

You may also want to call your phone company to check the phone line that is connected to your modem.


Drivers/Firmware

The majority of modem manufacturers provide updated drivers and modem firmware (software). Also, many new modems have been in stock for months before purchase. So, don’t assume that because your modem is "brand new" that you have the most recent driver/firmware updates. Visit the site of your modem manufacturer to download any driver or firmware updates for your specific modem model. If your modem manufacturer is not listed here, use a Search Engine to find their Internet Home Page. If you’d like to see your modem added to our Modem Manufacturer’s list, please drop us a note at support@nauticom.net and let us know which modem you own

Verify the current version(s) of your driver and firmware:

For Win95/98.

  1. On your desktop, double-click My Computer
  2. In My Computer, double-click Control Panel
  3. In the Control Panel, double click Modem
  4. Highlight the COM port attached to your modem.
  5. Select Driver.
  6. Make note of the communications driver, size, date, and time.
  7. Compare this information to the latest driver available on the modem manufacturers' home page.
  8. To view your firmware version, click More Info
  9. Wait a few seconds while Windows communicates with your modem.
  10. Next to the command ATI3 you will see the firmware revision number and date.
  11. Your modem manufacturer’s website should list the latest revision available.

Macintosh

We recommend contacting Apple with driver related inquiries. There are scripts built into the Macintosh Operating System. However, we DO NOT recommend updating these unless otherwise instructed by your manufacturer.

Initialization Strings

There are many sites on the web that list modem initialization strings. The key is to try a variety of strings until you find one that works best for your modem and connection. Following are links to various sites that list init strings. If you don’t find a good string at any of these sites, try using a search engine to find an init string that’s right for your modem.

How to add an init string:

Win95/98
  1. On your desktop, Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  3. Right-click your Nauticom icon
  4. Left-click Properties
  5. At the bottom of the General sheet, click the Configure button.
  6. Click the Connection tab.
  7. At the bottom right, click the Advanced button.
  8. Add the desired AT commands in the Extra settings field.
  9. Click the OK button.
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. Click the OK button one last time.
  12. Restart your computer and try your connection

For Macintosh running Config PPP
  1. Click the Apple icon and open Control Panels.
  2. Open Config PPP from the Control Panels menu.
  3. Click Config.
  4. Enter your modem init in the field labeled modem init.
  5. Click done to save your settings.
  6. Restart your Macintosh and try your connection.

For Macintosh using FreePPP
  1. Open FreePPP Setup
  2. Maximize the window
  3. Click on the Accounts tab.
  4. Click Edit, to edit your existing Nauticom account.
  5. Click on the Connection tab.
  6. Enter your modem init string in the field labeled Modem Init String.
  7. Click ok to save your changes
  8. Restart your Macintosh and try your connection

Phone Company

Your analog modem is designed to operate on standard analog 2-wire line phone service.

Line noise
Line noise refers to a specific impairment, labeled "1004Hz Signal to 3KHz Noise". The consumer typically has little control over local office switches and/or calls in the local long distance area. Regardless of adjustments made to your line by your local Telco, there may still be places where you can’t access a clean (low line-noise) connection. When line-noise is related to the local switching equipment, the issue is basically out of the hands of the subscriber. When contacting your Telco to address a line-noise issue, you will want to ask for testing of the condition of the phone wiring inside your home.

Nauticom's high-speed connections take advantage of digital technology. When dialing in to Nauticom, the answering modem and the end-user modem adjust to line conditions. Some users are going to find that their local phone system limits them to a 16.8K or 19.2K connect, regardless of the speed and/or technology offered by Nauticom.

Rural Area Customers
If you live in a rural area, and are at a far distance from you telephone company’s switch, your connection may not be as high as someone who lives closer to the telephone company switching equipment. This situation can be caused by line noise or signal degradation due to wiring lengths.

Weather Conditions
If your connection is poor in snowy, icy, or rainy weather, you may need to have your telephone company check your phone line. Moisture in the box outside of your home can cause poor connections or disconnects. Your phone company can test your lines during the above weather conditions to isolate possible problems.
