Area Code News

10-Digit Dialing - Effective July 12, 2001, Pennsylvania residents in the 412 and 724 area codes are required to dial the (area code) + telephone number for all local telephone calls. This allows the PA. Public Utility Commission to overlay the area code 878 in the 412 and 724 areas. This applies to phone calls inside and outside your area code (412, 724, 878). This also includes modem calls initiated on your computer and other electronic devices that dial phone numbers.

Calls within and between 412, 724 and 878 must be dialed using ten digits. With the new ten-digit dialing, you will no longer be required to dial a "1" before making a call between 412, 724, and 878.

You are still required to dial a "1" before all calls outside of these area codes, in addition to toll free 800 numbers. What You Need To Do!
Your Nauticom connection must be configured to use 10-digit dialing no later than July 12, 2001. If these configuration changes are not made on your computer, your local telephone company will no longer connect your modem-call to Nauticom. Get ready and start using 10-digit dialing now! Find your operating system below and configure your computer to use 10-digit dialing.

Configuring your PC for 10-digit dialing

Windows 3.1

1. Open Program Manager.
2. Double-click the Nauticom Internet program group.
3. Double-click the Nauticom Internet Dialer.
4. Click Properties.
5. Select the 'Locations' tab.
6. Enter the area code and access number to dial (ex. 999-999-9999) in the 'Provider Phone Number' field.
7. Place a check next to 'Dial Area Code'
8. Click OK.

Windows 95

1. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
3. Right-click your Nauticom icon.
4. Left-click Properties.
5. Enter the area code before the access number that is currently listed (ex. 999-999-9999) in the telephone number box.
6. Do not select 'Use country code and area code'
7. Click OK. Close Dial-up Networking and My Computer.

Windows 98

1. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
3. Right-click your Nauticom icon.
4. Left-click Properties.
5. Select Use Area Code and Dialing Properties.
6. Enter the area code to dial in the 'Area Code' box.
7. Click OK.
8. Close Dial-up Networking.

Windows NT 4

1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
3. Left-click Location.
4. Enter the area code to dial in the 'Area Code' box.
5. Left-click Area Code Rules.
6. Place a check next to 'Always dial the area code'.
7. Click OK.
8. Click OK.

Windows 2000

1. Click Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Click Network and Dial- up Settings.
4. Double-click your Nauticom icon.
5. Click Dialing Rules.
6. Click Edit.
7. Enter the area code to dial in the 'Area Code' box.
8. Click the Area Code Rules tab.
9. Click New.
10. Enter the Area code to dial in the 'Area code you are calling' box.
11. Place a check next to 'Include the area code'.
12. Click OK.
13. Click OK.
14. Click OK.

Windows ME

1. Double-click My Computer
2. Double-click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
4. Right-click your Nauticom icon.
5. Click Properties.
6. Enter the area code and access number to dial next to 'Phone number'.
7. Click OK.

Macintosh with FreePPP Dialer

1. Click the Apple menu.
2. Select Control Panels.
3. Select Freeppp Setup.
4. Select the 'Accounts' tab.
5. Select Nauticom.
6. Click Edit.
7. Enter the area code to dial in the 'Area Code' field.
8. Place a check next to 'Dial area code'.
9. Click OK.
10. Select the 'Locations' tab.
11. Click Edit.
12. Select Dial account area code without long distance prefix.
13. Click OK.

Macintosh with PPP

1. Click the Apple menu.
2. Select Control Panels.
3. Click PPP.
4. Enter the area code to dial before the access number that is currently listed (ex. 999-999-9999)
5. Close the Window.
6. Click Save to save your changes.

Macintosh With Remote Access

1. Click the Apple menu.
2. Select Control Panels.
3. Click Remote Access.
4. Uncheck 'DialAssist'.
5. Enter the area code to dial before the access number that is currently listed (ex. 999-999-9999)
6. Close the Window.
7. Click Save to save your changes.
